How to avoid holiday weight gain

This post is probably as much for my own benefit as anyone else – with a one week all inclusive beach break lined up it’s fair to say I will be indulging in a few treats on my holiday but I don’t want to be returning from my break half a stone heavier! Here are some of my easy tips for avoiding holiday weight gain while still enjoying yourself.

Indulge (in moderation)


Of course it is your holiday so you’re going to want to indulge, but so many of us spend months dieting in a bid to get fit for the beach and then promptly undo the hard work with a week of overeating. Instead try to keep to just one or two treats a day – whether it’s an ice cream in the sun or a tasty cocktail, chances are you’ll enjoy them more in moderation.

Watch out for the buffet


Buffet restaurants as found at many all inclusive resorts can lead to temptation to overload your plate and then go back for seconds, loading up on more calories as you want to try a little bit of everything. Try to load up half of your plate with salad and vegetables, splitting the other half between a protein option (meat, fish, eggs) and carbs. You can even go for the chips if you want to, just try not to have a portion bigger than ¼ of your plate to keep it balanced.

Don’t drink empty calories


Sure, that ice cold Coke/ beer/ fizzy drink is really refreshing in the sun but the liquid calories will soon add up. Try to stick to water as much as possible to save calories and keep hydrated, rather than drinking fizzy drinks and alcohol all day. If you’re drinking alcohol, spirits like vodka with soda and lime or gin and slimline tonic are your best bet as they’re low calorie and may help you to avoid a hangover (depending on how many you drink!).

Keep moving


Many of us love a day lounging by the pool or on the beach, only getting up for a quick dip in the pool or to get another drink, but it’s easy to get a bit more activity into your day. It doesn’t have to be anything strenuous…swim a couple of lengths, play bat and ball or go for a walk, and have the extra benefit of getting some sightseeing in. They’re all easy to do and will help to offset some of the calories from that third cocktail.

Relax


Chances are you’ll have worked hard for your holiday, and the most important thing is to relax and enjoy yourself. If you overindulge a little it’s not the end of the world, just try to make better choices the next day and don’t beat yourself up about it. Enjoy yourself!
